Sam Cox! Interview:
By Tyler Lloyd
Sam Cox is a footballer who is very versatile playing both in defence and his more regular position in midfield. He is currently a player for Hampton and Richmond FC and his national team Guyana. At youth level being a Tottenham Hotspur player, he has played alongside some professionals including, Andros Townsend of Crystal Palace, former Hull City midfielder Ryan Mason and Atletico Bilbao full-back Yuri Berchiche.
After making 24 appearances for the U-18s and two games coming off the bench for the reserves, Cox signed his first professional contract for Spurs in 2009.
Since then, Sam Cox had loan spells at clubs: Cheltenham Town, Histon and Torquay United, before parting ways with Spurs and joining league two side Barnet. Having made 10 appearances for them in 2010/11 season, he then went on loan to Boreham Wood in October of 2011. This was a very successful spell for him as, he secured the award for Boreham Wood’s ‘player of the season’ and helped the club achieve their highest ever position in the league. After this, Cox’s contract expired at Barnet and he then joined Hayes and Yeading United, where he was instantly made captain on his arrival for the 2012-13 season. He became a fan favourite at the club as, he was made ‘supporters’ player of the season’ for his contributions during that season.
After parting ways with Hayes and Yeading United Cox went on trial with Greenock Morton and Hamilton Academical however, he decided to re-join Boreham Wood in 2013, where he captained them and led the club to promotion into the National League for the first time in their history. In the same season yet again, Sam Cox received an award. This time it was the ‘chairman’s player of the season’. Cox career with Boreham Wood came to an end after making 98 appearances in three years during his second spell at the club.
In September of 2016, Cox signed for Wealdstone, where won even more personal honours such as, ‘supporters club player of the year’ and ‘Junior Stones player of the year’ in his debut season for the club. He went on to make 64 appearances for the club before joining the beavers. Sam Cox is becoming a vital player for the club and is hoping the club can push on in the future.
As well as a successful club career, Cox also honours the game internationally for Guyana. Although Cox was born and raised in England, he has Guyanese descent and received a call-up to the national team in 2015. Cox was given the Guyana captaincy in 2019 and led the team to qualify for the CONCACAF Gold Cup for the first time in his history and mentioning in the video that he “played against players like Christian Pulisic” and felt that “you don’t expect to get them kind of experiences at non-league level”.
As well as, playing the game, Cox is also a UEFA A Licence coach working at the Spurs academy and in 2018 winning the, Ugo Ehiogu ‘Ones to Watch’ award.
We thank Sam Cox for his time giving us the interview and hope to see him and the boys back in action for the Beavers soon.
